Friends of Niños Adelante, a charitable organization under Section 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, was organized in 1999 for the purpose of providing financial support for Fundación Niños Adelante (Niños Adelante), Spanish for friends of children forward. Founded in 1978 under the leadership of Liz Williams, an American expatriate, local realtor and consular agent for the United States Consular Agency in the State of Guerrero, Niños Adelante is a Mexican non-profit organization providing scholarships to needy, deserving children in the Zihuatanejo area of Mexico. The organization provides scholarship payments to qualifying children in grades 7 through 12 and beyond through four years of college at local institutions, thereby giving them the opportunity to complete high school and college and have a chance at better jobs and more rewarding lives than if their education were terminated after sixth grade. The Board of Directors of Friends of Niños Adelante currently consists of fourteen people who live from Pennsylvania to Minnesota to California and Canada. The Board has a mix of sponsors who have participated in the program 2-16 years with an average of 6 years as sponsors. Several directors and their spouses have been active in the organization for many years. Although we do not maintain official age records for directors, the age range is from mid-thirties to mid-sixties. The board meets several times per year via telephone conference and has typically met annually in February in Ixtapa. Also, Board members exchange information and ideas throughout the year. Sponsors and interested persons are welcome at the annual board meetings. |
