In Memory

    One of our most ardent and enthusiastic sponsors, Jim Nelson passed away at home in Vancouver, in his sleep, August 18 of natural causes.

    Operating from his headquarters on La Ropa Beach, Jim preached the virtues of getting involved in helping the students of Zihuatanejo.  He recruited many sponsors to the Niños program and other school construction programs in the area and kept tabs on a consistent supply of bright kids.

    Jim will be remembered and dearly missed by all of the children and friends in Zihuatanejo, and the many people from so many different places and walks of life whose paths he crossed. His spirit will forever illuminate La Ropa Beach through the amazing sunsets that he and Betty never missed from their front row seats in the sand.

    The following tribute to Jim was read at an "Adios to Jim" celebration held in his honor:

                          Dream what you want to dream;

                          Go where you want to go;

                          Be what you want to be,

                          Because you have only one life

                          And one chance to do all the things

                          You want to do.

                           May you have enough happiness

                           to make you sweet,

                           Enough trails to make you strong

                           Enough sorrow to keep you human

                           and Enough hope to make you happy.

                           The happiest of people  don't necessarily

                           have the best of everything;

                           They just make the most of

                           Everything that comes along their way.

                           The brightest future will always

                           Be based on a forgotten past;

                           You can't go forward in life until

                           You let go of your past failures and

                           heartaches.

                          When you were born, you were crying

                          And everyone around you was smiling

                          Live your life so at the end

                          You are the one who is smiling and

                          Everyone around you is crying.

BACK TO SCHOOL 2011

The students returned to school in August after receiving their "inscription" of 400 pesos and first monthly beca payout of 300 pesos in early August. The "inscription" money is provided to help the students with their initial school expenses. There will be eight more monthly beca payouts of 300 pesos and a Christmas /Birthday gift of 300 pesos given to each junior high and high school student for a total annual amount of 3400 pesos which is computed on the basis of 11.5 pesos to the dollar. In the event we realize a more favorable exchange rate we will provide the students a larger gift at Christmas.

The college students  also reported for their becas in August, receiving 2900 pesos or half of their annual beca.  Jose will see the college students again in January to provide them the remaining 2900 pesos.

Friends of Niños board establishes the Irene Sheahen Memorial College Scholarship program.

Thanks in great part to Frank Sheahen’s generous donation, a grant will be awarded each year to the outstanding Niños Adelante high school senior who has been accepted to attend a major university in Mexico.

All students meeting our eligibility criteria who are planning to go away to a major university or college in Mexico to earn a Bachelor’s degree are encouraged to submit an application. High School Seniors are eligible to apply and all applications must be received by April 1st. The winning applicant will be selected from the applicants by the Niños Adelante Scholarship Committee.

Eligibility Criteria:

1.      Strong moral character

2.      High School senior graduates of Niños Adelante Program (3 years minimum in the program)

3.      Committed to earning a four-year college degree at a significant university outside of Guerrero (excepting Chilpancingo)

4.      Willing to share their personal story.

5.      G.P.A. of 9.5 at end of Junior year (to be maintained during Senior year)

Grant:

A grant of $1500 per year for four years will be administered beginning with acceptance to university and continue annually for a total of four years upon successful completion of each year with a minimum G.P.A. of 8.0. Payment of the grant during each year will be as follows:  One half at the beginning of each year and one half in January of each year.

Times are changing in Zihuatanejo.  Our high school graduates are looking beyond the vocationally oriented opportunities offered by local colleges.  In the past several years we have had a half dozen or so kids leave home in pursuit of professional degrees in Medicine, Law, Chemistry, Architecture, etc.  This has raised the bar and the sights of all our students. This scholarship has the potential to be a major motivator for all students in our program.

In addition to the generous gift from the Sheahen family, a special college scholarship fund has been established to support this program. Your tax deductable gifts to this fund will be very much appreciated

ZIHUATANEJO BENEFIT DINNER

The Benefit Dinner was held held this year at the beautiful Suspiro restaurant located in the Pacifica Grand above Zihuatanejo's La Ropa Beach on Thursday, February 17, 2011.  Next year's event will be held at Suspiro on Thursday February 16, 2012.  For those of you who attended this year you recognize that although the evening was a success, there were some glitches.  The meal and meal service was without doubt the finest we have experienced.  On the other hand the cocktail set up and service needs improvement.  The Suspiro management was quick to recognize the issue and has proposed enhancements for 2012.

FIESTA DE MAYO 2009

Jose has done it again!  On May 24 he organized an "end of the year party" for the kids. One hundred and fifty one (the largest group ever) participated. They were treated to lunch, swiming, games and even an address by fellow college student Margarita Reynoso. The address preceded the fun and games. One can see from the pictures that the kids were spellbound by Margarita's comments.  Of course they were also anxious to get to the beach.

Here in Jose's own words is a brief report on the festivities.

"Dear friends  just to inform about the students day party on May 24. it was at the  Fontan hotel  were we got  a reunion with the students at the convention center, where our student Margarita Reynoso  gave a message  to the students as she as studding psychology. "

It was so good to talk with all the students about  different points.

The attendance was of  151 students".
