BOARD RECOMMENDS COLLEGE BECA PLAN TO NIÑOS ADELANTE

For over 25 years, Friends of Niños Adelante has provided funding to Niños Adelante to fund scholarships for Zihuatanejo 7-12th graders. Recently, there has be an encouraging trend of an increasing number of graduating seniors who have expressed an interest in and academic ability to continue their education at a local college. Until now, we have not had a mechanism to support these students through Friends of Niños Adelante.

At the May 25, 2005 Board meeting of the Friends of Niños Adelante, the Board passed a resolution recommending to Niños Adelante, the Zihuatanejo organization that administers the student beca program, that it establish a college scholarship for qualified students who demonstrate a desire to continue their education at one of the several local Federal colleges. Because of the higher costs associated with attending college, Friends of Niņos will fund  $500 US for each qualified student. Friends will also provide the mechanism for linking either existing Sponsors or in cases where circumstances dictate, new Sponsors with the college students.

The recommended sponsor contribution is $500 US, however, for those pre 2005 sponsors who are more comfortable with contributing at the $300 level we are pleased to have them continue as sponsors of their student through college. The Board authorized establishing a special college scholarship fund to make up any difference. All Sponsors including those with college level students will be given the opportunity to contribute to this fund.
