About Friends of Niños Adelante

Friends of Niños Adelante, Inc. a charitable organization under Section 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, was organized in 1999 for the purpose of providing financial support for the Mexican non-profit                                                                    .

Founded in 1978 under the leadership of Liz Williams, an American expatriate, local realtor and consular agent for the United States Consular Agency in the State of Guerrero, Niños Adelante provides scholarships to needy, high achieving and deserving children in the Zihuatanejo area of Mexico.  The organization provides scholarship payments to qualifying children in grades 7 through 12 and, since 2006, for program graduates, through trade school, college or university, including post-graduate work.  Both Friends of Niños Adelante and Niños Adelante exist based on the belief that education is an essential prerequisite to have a chance at better jobs and more rewarding lives than if their education were terminated after sixth grade.

The                                   of Friends of Niños Adelante currently consists of seven people who live from Pennsylvania to Minnesota to California and Canada.  The Board has a mix of sponsors who have participated in the program 2-16 years with an average of 6 years as sponsors.  Several directors and their spouses have been active in the organization for many years.  Although we do not maintain official age records for directors, the age range is from mid-thirties to seventies.

The Board typically meets several times during the year via telephone conference and in person in February in Ixtapa, Mexico, a beach resort community just a few miles from Zihuatanejo.  Sponsors and interested persons are welcome at the February Board meetings.
